¶ RulesBelow is a synopsis of the rules with an explanation of their meaning. |
||
1. Follow the Prime Directive: Treat everyone with respect and dignity, exactly how you want to be treated. Hopefully self-explanatory, but no dehumanizing (I know, the very term is racist) of members of the community or of communities or peoples in general. |
||
2. Respect All Life Forms: No racial, sexual, gender-identity, or cultural discrimination. No homophobia, transphobia, racial slurs or stereotypes, misgendering, dead-naming, etc. What it says on the label. Overt discrimination of any kind is grounds for immediate suspension. Misunderstandings can happen, but patterns of abusive behavior will also be grounds for suspension. |
||
3. Shields Up: If content is potentially offensive or triggering, NSFW, etc. Please label it with a CW to protect members of the community who may not wish to view it. Try to consider the impact of your content on others. Please follow the guidelines below. Not adhering to at least the minimum required content warning standards may be grounds for immediate account suspension. |

5. Do Not Be Dank and Vile: Harassment, Threats, and inciting or encouraging violence or self harm will not be tolerated.

Like all aspects of Mastodon, trends here are established not by algorithms, but by people. The instance keeps track of the most commonly shared and boosted items, in order to offer them for viewing under the #Explore or Trending, (depending on your app) areas. In order for items to appear in Trends and News, they must be approved by moderators. Note, moderators do not chose content, they only approve content chosen by the community. The standards for moderation of each content type are listed below:
Posts are permitted to trend as long as they conform to community standards based on the rules listed above. Trusted posters, known to regularly post within guidelines may be whitelisted by moderators, unless and until content is found to not to conform to community standards.
Hashtags are permitted to trend as long as they conform to community standards based on the rules listed above, and as long as the tag is generally not offensive or NSFW. (Note: NSFW hashtags will not be blocked from search or follow but will not show up in trends).
Due to the prevalence of misinformation on social media, special care and attention is given to moderation of the shared news articles on this instance. The following criteria are used for judging sources of trending articles:
These rules are meant to help establish trust in items read on this service. Note: the rules in this section do not prevent the sharing of articles by users. They are only applied to articles allowed to trend in the #Explore and News areas. Articles and links may be shared by users provided they conform to community guidelines to the extent that they are not obviously or deliberately spreading misinformation.
Moderation is performed on a per instance basis by either instance administrators or moderators and should be done in accordance with the rules of the local instance. Users can face moderation from either their own instance or from the instance of a user they interact with, though depending on the offense the response may be different. Some examples may help clarify:
Violation | Consequence |
---|---|
UserA@InstanceA breaks rule on in InstanceA | Moderators on InstanceA may Warn, Limit, or Suspend the UserA |
UserA@InstanceA breaks rule on InstanceB, but not InstanceA | Moderators on InstanceB may Block UserA from interacting with InstanceB |
UserA@InstanceA breaks rule on InstanceB, and InstanceA |
Moderators on InstanceB may Block UserA from interacting with InstanceB and forward complaint to Moderators on InstanceA who may Warn, Limit, or Suspend the UserA |
Moderation and rule enforcement is done on a per instance basis. Users should conform to the rules of their servers, and Moderators should uniformly enforce the rules of their instance. If a servers cannot agree on rule enforcement, or if there is a severe disparity in the community rules between instances, the administrators may limit interaction between the instances.
Silencing - Administrators may limit the visibility of content from an offending remote instance to only users that follow users there, preventing it from being generally visible locally to avoid offensive materials or interactions being visible while minimally disputing user experience. This is sometimes referred to as Silencing the instance.
Defederation - The last resort of moderation is to block interactions between the offending instances. This is referred to as Defederation. Defederated servers will prevent any interaction between users on the respective systems.
